May 30 - Roan High Knob to Overmountain Shelter

We really wanted to spend the night at the Overmountain Shelter, an old barn that had been converted into a shelter. But because we had pushed hard the previous days, today would only be 8 miles. Oh what the heck, we deserve an easy day!

It was a great day for taking it slow. Gorgeous views!

We took a side trail up Grassy Ridge Bald (The sign with the stinky Thru-hiker is hilarious! Most signs are not plastic like that, most are made of wood or not there at all! Lol). Because we were in no hurry to make miles today, we were able to take a nice long break on the bald. Surprisingly we a a bit of a cell signal. We were able to talk to mom and attempted to get in contact with a news reporter who wanted to write a story about my trip and the fact that I am skipping my high school graduation.

The barn was neat. Our book says that it sleeps 20 people, but you could definitely 30 or more in here. A couple of people were even hammocking from the rafters. We chatted with a south bounder who had done the trail before about places to resupply, the best places to eat, upcoming terrain, and such. A couple walked up with a Chihuahua while we were eating dinner. This is the third Chihuahua I've seen on the trail. Isn't that crazy?

  1. That barn looks so neat! Much prettier in color than the photo in the AWOL book. So, do you have to walk thru the barn on the trail, or is this a side trail that leads to the barn?

That blue sky in the last photo seems to rival the Colorado blue sky I remember from our vacations. I would really love to be with you in that second photo, enjoying God's beautiful handiwork... Although I think I would want to be upwind. ;-)

I love you, Mary and Will! Can't wait to see you in a few weeks!

    1. It's a side trail to the barn, but you walk through the barn to get to the privy!

  2. The picture of you standing on the rock with you hiking poles is really cool. Danny and I read the article in the Daily Journal. Of course, I didn't like the article as much as reading what you post, especially because of the pictures.
